Pada metode hidroponik fungsi dari media pengganti tanahnya yaitu untuk menyangga tanaman saja dan yang terpenting yaitu air berfungsi untuk melarutkan nutrisi yang akan diserap oleh akar tanaman. Dengan metode hidroponik maka petani dapat menghemat tempat maupun waktu.
